Texaco Calmar No. 5 was drilled and operated by Texaco Canada in 1950. The well was ultimately found to be unproductive and was abandoned in 1954. Decades later, gaseous bubbles were observed forming in pools of water on the property of Calmar Elementary in 2008 by a developer. A cursory investigation revealed the previously hidden gas well. Imperial Oil was later identified as the well owner, as it had acquired Texaco Canada in 1989 and took ownership of its assets and infrastructure. Between 2008 and 2011, Imperial Oil reclaimed the well and achieved RecExempt certification.
