In 1950, the Marjack Well No.1 was drilled. It was operated for several years and eventually became owned by Legal Oil and Gas Ltd., though it never produced meaningful product and was eventually suspended in 1982. Legal Oil and Gas Ltd. filed for bankruptcy in 2001, stranding the Marjack Well No. 1 among other infrastructure and the company began the process of liquidating and distributing its assets to unpaid creditors.[1]

In 2003, attempts by Legal to transfer licenses of select assets were denied due to concerns with the company’s history of failing to reclaim its polluted properties and suspect asset transfers between family members involved with the company.[2] Ultimately the Marjack Well No.1 well was abandoned in 2004, though it has not yet been remediated.
