In october 2004, range revisited the well in order to  hydraulically fracture areas of the  the marcellus, where they had reported large gas shows during drilling in 2003.  Range Resources began producing shale gas at the Renz Number 1 in 2005, Following the development of Renz number 1 Range resources proceeded to expanded operations in the Marcellus,  drilling hundreds of shale gas wells in Washington County. <ref>Ross H. == Impact ==

Subsequent to the completion of the Renz 1 Well,  the Range resources corporation began a adapting horizontal drilling techniques developed in the barnett shale of texas.  after finding success with these methods Range Resources proceed to extensively employ slickwater hydraulic fracturing techniques with horizontal drilling to increase the economic viability of their activities in the Marcellus shale.<ref>Kristin M. Carter, John A. Harper, Katherine W. Schmid,

and Jaime Kostelnik.[http://deg.aapg.org/Portals/0/documents/EG11008.pdf "Unconventional natural gas resources in Pennsylvania: The backstory of the modern Marcellus Shale play"].December, 2011. ''Environmental Geosciences''Retrieved 13 May, 2015</ref> Following the successful drilling of the Renz 1 discovery well the development of new wells proceeded very rapidly; two wells  were  drilled  in  2005,  eleven  in  2006,  thirty-four  in  2007,  210 in  2008,  768 in  2009,  and  1,454 in  2010.  by december  2010, approximately  2,500  Marcellus  wells  had  been  drilled  in  Pennsylvania.<ref>Kristin M.
