Marcellus Shale Coalition

The Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC) is a non-profit gas industry trade group, founded in 2008.[1] The MSC is based in Pittsburgh, and has five offices throughout Pennsylvania. The MSC works with companies involved in the production of natural gas in the Appalachian basin, where the Marcellus shale bed is located. The MSC currently has over 40 full time members and more than 200 associated members.[2] It seeks to provide information to companies, policy-makers and the public about the positive impact of natural gas for both communities and the economy. It accomplishes this goal in a number of ways, including publishing the Marcellus Quarterly Magazine, a free magazine that publishes studies and articles pertaining to natural gas production.[3] The MSC also seeks to improve public opinion of natural gas production. One campaign launched in September 2014 sought to remove the negative connotations of the word ‘fracking’, and “take that word back” in an attempt to improve public opinion on fracking.[4]

Leadership

Kathryn Klaber was the first president of the Marcellus Shale Coalition. She assumed the position in early 2009, soon after the organization was formed, and was important for the early development and progress of the MSC. She stepped down in 2013, and was replaced by the current president, David J. Spigelmyer. Like Klaber, Spigelmyer was with the group from its beginning in 2008, and helped found it.[5] Spigelmyer has expressed his desire to focus the MSC on outreach to the public and to policy-makers.[6]

The 2012 report of the MSC’s fiscal year stated that about ten percent of the total expenses of the organization went to executive compensation, with a further ten percent going to "other salaries and wages."[7] The total revenue for the year was $12,507,926, with a net income of $2,626,218.[8]
