| 0981309173 | 2014-08-13 | Orphan | No Violations | Follow-up to Complaint #4768 about a leaking historic well with no known owner. I inspected the well and found the old mechanical pumping unit disengaged from the well head. There was no sign of the shackle line that once pumped the well. 6.25 casing was present and the wellhead was equipped with 2 tubing and a 1 relief line. The tubing was broken at the top of the casing head and the tubing tee and stuffing box were at a 45 degree angle. The 1 relief line was elbowed down to almost ground level and was burping up gas, oil, and possibly salt water. I confirmed the presence of methane with my PhD6 gas meter and triggered the alarm about 1 above the discharge area. The CH4 reading was 0.55 and the LEL registered 6. There was an obvious smell of gas in the immediate area but quickly dissipated away from the wellhead. The closest inhabited dwelling is roughly 800 from the wellhead and there is a drainage area within 100 of the leak. The landowner has buried a metal bucket under the relief line to try and catch any liquids. An impacted area about 5 in diameter around the bucket and wellhead is visibly oil stained. I will start an orphan well case file for this leaking well. |
