0041694297 2018-02-20 Production Wells No Violations On the day of my inspection I found that no work had been started on remediating the site for brine contamination. I spoke with John Mason with Mason Drilling. John said that he has been out to look at the site. He claimed that the well was sold to a landowner by his father and the paperwork was never filed. John said that they have not been producing this well, and he will contact the landowner to get the well transfer submitted. He also said that he will take care of the clean-up since the well is still in his name. We discussed his options for excavating and hauling the material as opposed to attempting bio-remediation in place. John agreed to contact me as soon as he gets back from vacation so we can meet at the site and get started.
0798720250 2018-03-06 Production Wells No Violations On the day of my inspection I found that John Mason had a bulldozer and a mini track-hoe staged at the access road entrance. No work had been done at the well site. I called John and he said that his excavator has been off the past couple weeks, but he is planning on getting back to work soon. John also said that he has been in touch with the Bickles about getting the well transferred over as a domestic once the clean up is completed.
0813627969 2018-03-16 Production Wells No Violations On the day of my inspection I found that the tank had been drained and laid on its side. I did not find any holes or signs of a leak on the bottom of the tank. There were no stains in the gravel that would be indicative of a tank bottom leak. Mason had excavated approximately 12 to 15 inches of soil from the suspected brine path. The water that had collected in the excavation ditch was frozen. They were also starting to construct a new earthen dike 50 feet from the wellhead. John Mason said that they put the excavated soil in his dump truck and he was taking it to Apex, where he takes his solid waste from his injection well. John said that he would get me a copy of the ticket.
0902613510 2018-03-19 Production Wells No Violations On the day of my inspection I found that Mason had the tank moved to the new dike, which was 50 feet from the wellhead. The old tank location was being graded out. John Masons crew found a split screw on the tank valve and he suspected that it was the source of the brine scald that was running from the tank. John said that he has encountered the same problem with those types of valves in the past. They installed a new valve on the tank when they set it in the new dike. The front wall of the dike still needs to be finished and identification still needs to be posted. Once the work is complete and the compliance notice is resolved John will transfer the well to the landowners as an exempt domestic well.
1517511496 2018-02-01 Production Wells Violations Noted On the day of my inspection I found that the access road to the well and tank was clear and passable. The well site was open and covered in mixed grasses. The well was equipped with 4.5-inch diameter casing with two casing nipples and a 4.5 to 2-inch swage. One of the nipples connected to a 2-inch diameter steel line and closed valve that was plumbed directly to the top of a 100-barrel steel tank. There was also a 1-inch diameter steel line connected to the other casing nipple that was plumbed through an open valve and vertical drip bottle. There was a gauge on the swage that showed 40 PSI. The 100-barrel steel tank was set on gravel 23 feet from the well. There was not a containment dike around the tank, which was approximately half full of fluid. There was no identification posted at the well or on the tank. There was a plastic drum with a large square cut out laying on its side next to the tank. The inside of the drum was oil stained and there was ice in the bottom. I found a bare, stone-lined path leading from the front of the tank, under the drain valve, to the edge of the well site. The bare soil in the path was saturated and dark in coloration. There was some water pooled in the stones at the head of the path. I conducted a field test for the presence of chlorides in the pooled water with a low range Quantab titrator strip. The low range strip maxed out, so I used a high range Quantab, which indicated a chloride level of 0.610% NaCl or 3700 ppm(mg/L). I did not observe any conspicuous vegetation stress in the forested area below the path, as it was covered in heavy leaf litter and the trees were bare. I found no visible waterways near the well site and the closest waterway on Topo 9 was over 3000 feet away. This well is listed as producing under Mason Drilling Inc., but there are no annual production reports for this well after 1990. I called John Mason to report what I had found. Mr. Mason claimed that he was not familiar with the well and he was not current
1520529553 2018-03-08 Production Wells No Violations John Mason called to notify me that they were getting started today. When I arrived at the site I found that Mason Drilling had two water trucks and a two-man crew there to drain the tank and flip it on its side to inspect the bottom. The workers were just getting their equipment ready to winch the water trucks down into the location. They said that there was approximately 60 barrels in the tank and they believed it was all oil. They said that they probably wouldnt have the tank turned until the end of the day. I will check back tomorrow to see what they found.
1521049557 2018-03-14 Production Wells No Violations On the day of my inspection I found that the tank was still upright and no one was working at the site. I called John Mason who said that they tried to pump the fluid out of the tank, but the last two or three feet in the bottom was so thick that his centrifugal pump could not move it. John said that they plan to get in tomorrow with a vacuum truck to work more on getting the tank emptied.
1776217232 2018-03-23 Production Wells No Violations On the day of my inspection I found that the tank had been reset 50 feet from the wellhead in an earthen dike. The soil that had been exposed to brine water had been excavated and removed from the site. The former tank location had excavation area had been graded out with the rest of the location. The flow line to the tank had been reconnected and the tank valve was equipped with a bull plug. There was no identification posted on the tank yet, because Mason Drilling is in the process of transferring the well to the landowners, Mr. and Mrs. Bickle. Mason Drilling sent me a copy of the manifest from Apex Solids Control that showed 2.29 tons of material. The compliance notice is resolved.
