0087224708 | 2011-11-16 | Salt Water Injection Well | No Violations | I performed a random inspection on this well. The pressure was 2450 PSI. I asked NORTE Oil and Gas trucking company for their Ohio Brine/UIC registration. The foreman for NORTE, Tim Mann, did not have it in hand but called the office to see if they had the registration. NORTE did not have the registration. NORTE had unloaded seven 100 barrel trucks and was unloading the eighth truck. The eighth truck had unloaded before I could shut him down. I told Mr. Mann that his trucks could NOT come back until his company had the Ohio UIC/Brine registration. I later called the head office in Williamsport PA (570-322-1056. I talked with Deana who was head of the permitting at the office. She said she is in the process of getting the Ohio permits for their trucks. |

1319479141 | 2011-10-10 | Salt Water Injection Well | No Violations | Recent seismic activity in the Mahoning Valley has raised concerns that the deep (drilled to basement) salt water injection wells are facilitating these events. This well was drilled to a total depth (TD) of 9,184 with 5-1/2 casing set at 8,215 and 8-5/8 surface casing set at 1,010. The 2-7/8 tubing packer was set at 8,200. The salt water injection zone extends from the bottom of the 5-1/2 casing to TD and includes the following formations, Copper Ridge, Conasauga, Rome, Mount Simon, granite wash and Precambrian basement. The purpose of todays actions were to determine where in this sequence the injected brine was going. On site personnel and contractors included Larry Smyers and Dave Jenkins (D&L Energy), Evan Zeller (Battelle), Larry Shamblin (Core Laboratories) and numerous Superior Well Service personnel providing open hole and cased hole logging tools, pump truck, crane truck and field hands.
Step I - Superior ran a gamma ray log to correlate with the open hole nuclear logs completed during the drilling phase. The gamma ray tool was run inside of the 2-7/8 tubing set at 8,230 and through the tubing into open hole. A new logger TD was established at 8,940 which is 244 shallower than the TD noted on the original open hole logs. This new depth places the bottom of the hole just above the granite wash overlying the Precambrian basement. The cause of the fill-up is unknown but it should be noted that the gamma ray tool had only a one inch diameter and is very light. It is possible that the open hole is not filled to 8,940 but is simply bridged at that point and the light tool could not penetrate the bridge. It should also be noted that the open hole gamma ray tool response was much more active on this day than immediately following the drilling phase. This tool response variation may be due to the fact that nearly 1,000,000 bbl of flowback and production water from the highly reactive Marcellus Shale has been injected in this well in the last 10 months.
