I met with the landowner and she showed me areas in the back of her yard that contained dead grass and stagnant, ponded water exhibiting an iridescent sheen. I disturbed the sheen and it broke up into platelets, did not try and reform, and did not have any indicative odor as would a petroleum product. This indicates that the sheen is likely a by-product of the bacterial breakdown of organic material in the stagnant water. This area is a low collection area that drains directly into the pond and the oversaturation of the soil by numerous precipitation events this summer has caused the grass to die. I inspected well and production equipment 300 to the north and found no sources of contamination or pollution. The wellhead was equipped with a plunger lift system and produced through a vertical separator and into a 100 barrel tank due west of the wellhead. The tank battery was diked and there were no signs of oil or brine inside containment. There was a domestic tap at the wellhead that ran to a residence to the southeast. The sales line ran due west to a metering station where it tied into a Dominion line and continued west off of the property. I inspected the pond and found the same bacterial sheen along the western edge of the pond as I found in the ponds natural drainage inlet. A brown algae was also present along the western edge of the pond. The landowner indicated that the aerator in the pond has not worked in some time and this likely has allowed the growth of the algal material. I grabbed a sample of the water, sheen, and algal material and found no indication that it was related to crude oil and had no petroliferous odor. I poured the sample on an oil diaper and nothing was absorbed into the pad indicating there was no crude oil in the sample.
