Record Last Modified 2019-03-25 KEN PIISPANEN INSPECTED WELL 11/4/2008. JIM ECKEL WAS HARVESTING CORN WHEN THE COMBINE DROPPED INTO A SINK HOLE IN FIELD. HOLD WAS APPROXIMATELY 4 FEET IN DIAMETER AND 2 TO 3 FEET DEEP. THERE WAS ABOUT 1/4 INCH OF OIL ON TOP OF WATER IN HOLE. NO CASING OR BOREHOLE WAS NOTED.

We decided to fill the hole with stone to try to bridge off the unknown borehole to keep the ground from subsiding. Mr. Eckel agreed with the plan. We offered to pay for the stone and labor to complete the work but he never contacted us about payment. I assume he did the work and decided not to ask for reimbursement. He does have wells on his other property that are on the I&O program. as per Inspector Ken Piispanen

0593276188 2008-11-13 Orphan No Violations Met with farmer Jim Eckel and ODNR representatives Jeff Fry and Mike McCormac to look at orphan well location. Mr. Eckel excavated ground at sinkhole to depth of approximately 6-8 feet. No borehole or casing was found. Oil and water were in the bottom of the hole. The ground in the bottom of the hole was soft and could be penetrated with a steel rod. Gas bubbles escaped where the ground was penetrated. The sides of the hole were hard clay and it was difficult to push the steel rod into the clay. Further consideration will be needed since no casing or borehole was located.
1299922068 2008-11-04 Orphan No Violations Met on site with farmer Jim Eckel. While harvesting corn the combine dropped into a sink hole in the field. The hole was approximately 4 feet in diameter and 2-3 feet deep. There was about 1/4 inch of oil on top of the water in the hole. No casing or borehole was noted. Will check with Columbus office for advice to procede.
